For us at Hotell Stenugnen, the personal meeting with you as a guest is the very best. We want to give you the best possible experience of us and our fantastic island. If we get the chance, we'll be happy to tell you about cozy donut places around the island and about our favorite restaurants in Visby inner city. Feel free to ask and we will help you find the right one.
Thanks to the fact that we are a small hotel with 15 rooms, we have succeeded in creating a family environment where everything feels very close.
History of the house and hotel:
Close to the ring wall, where the city's piers and harbor were located in the Middle Ages, the coal merchant Johansson had a coal and coke warehouse built in 1909. The sign still remains as a memorial on the north end of the house. If you let the tank run free, you might be able to hear the clatter of the horse-drawn carriages that drove in through the big gates towards Korsgatan to load and unload under cover. Where does the name Stenovnen come from? Well, as an interlude, during the 1990s one of Sweden's finest pizzerias was located here and yes, they baked their pizzas in a stone oven. We have kept the name as a reminder of this time. The house has since been carefully renovated into today's hotel, which opened its doors for the first time in 2005.
In the spring of 2023, it was time for Anna & Urban Svalling to hand over the hotel to new owners after 5 years.
From the opening on 8 May, it is now Tobbe Larsson & Emma Lindau who take over as the new owners of Hotel Stenugnen. It will be their second hotel in Visby as they also run Hotel Villa Alma.
- We are really looking forward to running this hotel further in the same fine spirit, Anna & Urban have done a great job over the years and now we hope to continue developing this fine hotel, it will be very exciting and fun!
Best Regards Emma & Tobbe and staff
