About us
For us at Hotell Stenugnen, the personal meeting with you as a guest is the very best. We want to give you the best imaginable experience of us and our fantastic island. If we get the opportunity, we are happy to tell you about cozy strawberries and our favorite restaurants in downtown Visby. Feel free to ask and we will help to the best of our ability.
Thanks to our small size, we have managed to create a family-friendly environment where you as a guest come close to both us who work here and your fellow guests. Meetings between people are the best we know.
Our history:
Close to the ring wall, where the city's bridges and harbor lay during the Middle Ages, the coal merchant Johansson had erected a coal and coke warehouse in 1909. The sign is still left as a memorial on the northern gable of the house. If you let the tank go freely, you might hear the clatter from the horse carriages that drove in through the large gates towards Korsgatan to load and unload under roof. This building has been carefully renovated into today's hotel, which first opened its doors in 2005.
In 2017, the next generation of hotel owners took over, Anna & Urban Svalling, with the ambition of developing Stenugnen into the most familiar hotel in Visby.
You may wonder the name Stone oven. As an interlude, in the 1990s, one of Sweden's finest pizzerias was located here and yes, they baked their pizzas in a stone oven. We have kept the name as a reminder.
Korsgatan at last, breathe history, and got its name from the stone cross which is about 50 meters to the left of the hotel entrance. According to tradition, the blood flowed here after a terrible battle where Valdemar Atterdag 1361 had an entire Gotland peasant army killed outside the eastern part of the ring wall. The blood is said to have flowed along the steeply sloping streets and all the way down to Korsgatan. To mark the end point of the blood flow and in memory of the stroke, this stone cross was later erected.
